In short

LiveMemory is MyHeritage's newer animation tool: it animates the whole scene, not just the face. It requires the Photo plan ($49.90/year according to MyHeritage, 20 animations/year) or Omni ($339/year according to MyHeritage, 30/year). For fewer photos per year: Incarn at EUR 1.99/photo, first animation free, no subscription. For zero cost: Genie by FamilySearch, free with watermark. For restoration before animation: Remini. LiveMemory makes most sense if you are already paying for MyHeritage.

TL;DR: LiveMemory requires the Photo plan ($49.90/year according to MyHeritage, 20 animations/year) or Omni ($339/year according to MyHeritage). For a smaller collection: Incarn charges EUR 1.99 per photo, first animation free, no subscription. For zero cost: Genie by FamilySearch, free with watermark. Deep Nostalgia® from the same company animates just the face and is included in more plans. LiveMemory makes sense if you are already paying for MyHeritage.

MyHeritage® launched LiveMemory in late 2024. Unlike Deep Nostalgia®, which has been on the platform since 2021 and animates a single face using a GAN model with predefined paths, LiveMemory animates the whole scene. The motion is generated fresh for each image. The result is more naturalistic than Deep Nostalgia, and it shows on family groups, outdoor portraits, and photos with movement already implied in the original frame.

The catch is the pricing model. LiveMemory requires a subscription to MyHeritage: the Photo plan at $49.90/year (according to MyHeritage), capped at 20 animations per year. The Omni plan costs $339/year (according to MyHeritage) with a quota of 30. If you are buying a MyHeritage plan solely to animate photographs, the math is worth doing before you check out.

These five alternatives are worth knowing before you commit.

What LiveMemory Does Well

LiveMemory's advantage is its integration with the MyHeritage ecosystem. If you are already researching your family tree on MyHeritage, your photos are already there, identified, tagged, and linked to the people in your tree. Animating a photo does not require uploading it anywhere new.

The animation quality is solid. The model generates motion specific to the image rather than applying a template, which means two photos of different people do not produce the same movement. For genealogy users who already pay for a plan, this is a capable feature with no extra cost.

Where it falls short for many users:

  • You pay an annual subscription even if you animate five photos a year
  • Credits are capped regardless of the plan
  • The plan does not roll over: unused animations in year one do not carry to year two
  • If you only want to animate old photos and have no interest in genealogy features, you are paying for a lot you will not use

For those situations, the alternatives below do the job with fewer strings attached.

Incarn: Per Photo, No Plan Required

Incarn was built specifically for old family photos. Upload a portrait, receive a short animated clip, pay per photo. No annual plan. No renewal. No cap.

The model (Seedance 2.0 by BytePlus) generates motion from the photograph itself. On sepia prints, heavily worn prints, and faded black and white portraits, it produces head movement and a natural blink without the blank-eyed result you sometimes get from older GAN models. Output is HD when paid. Processing takes under two minutes.

Pricing: EUR 1.99 for a single photo. Packs bring the cost down: EUR 0.80 per photo at the 50-photo level. The first animation at signup is free, rendered as a preview with a watermark; the paid version removes the watermark and upgrades to HD.

Two sisters found a photograph from their parents' wedding anniversary dance, 1958, a ballroom in Brussels, their father in a dark suit and their mother in a dress she had sewn herself. They animated it and played it during the speech at their parents' fiftieth anniversary dinner. The image had sat in an envelope since it was taken. It moved for the first time that evening.

Deep Nostalgia®: The Other MyHeritage Tool

If you are looking at LiveMemory, you have probably already seen Deep Nostalgia®. They are different products from the same company, and they coexist on the platform.

Deep Nostalgia® uses a GAN model from 2021 and animates a single face using a set of predefined motion paths. The result is consistent and recognizable, though the motion path is the same across photos. It does not animate the full scene. LiveMemory, by contrast, generates scene-specific motion. For a plain portrait with one face, Deep Nostalgia® often produces an acceptable result at a lower plan tier.

Deep Nostalgia® is included in the Photo plan ($49.90/year according to MyHeritage) and the Complete plan (EUR 258/year, EUR 149 the first year, according to MyHeritage). LiveMemory is not included in Complete: it requires the Photo plan or Omni. This is a meaningful distinction if you are comparing costs.

For a detailed breakdown of what each plan covers and how the two tools compare side by side, the MyHeritage LiveMemory review covers both in full.

Genie by FamilySearch: Completely Free, With a Watermark

Genie is the portrait animation tool built into FamilySearch. Access requires a FamilySearch account, which is also free. No quota, no paywall, no expiry.

The output carries a FamilySearch watermark. Quality-wise, Genie uses a motion model that is less sophisticated than Seedance or LiveMemory, and it struggles more on heavily damaged or low-resolution scans. For a photograph in reasonable condition shared in a family group chat, it is a perfectly functional starting point.

Genie is the right call when: you want to test photo animation before spending anything, you already have a FamilySearch account, or the watermark is not an issue for the context you have in mind.

For a setting where quality and watermark-free output matter, such as a projector screen at a reunion or a printed tribute program, the gap between Genie and paid tools will be visible.

Motionleap: Manual Control on Mobile

Motionleap, made by Lightricks, is a mobile app for iOS and Android. What makes it different is manual control: you define which parts of the photo should move and which should stay still, dragging flow arrows across the image. This produces cleaner edges on portrait animation than fully automatic tools, because you are deciding what the background does rather than leaving that to the algorithm.

The free version adds a watermark. A subscription removes it. The app is mobile-only, which is a practical limitation if you prefer working from a desktop browser.

Motionleap works well for users who want hands-on control over the output and are comfortable working on a phone or tablet. For a comparison of similar tools in this category, Motionleap alternatives for old photo animation covers the options in detail.

Remini: Restoration First, Animation Second

Remini is primarily a photo restoration tool. It sharpens grain, repairs damage, and reconstructs faces in heavily worn prints better than most alternatives on this list. Animation is a secondary feature: one clip per day on the free tier, with a subscription for more.

The practical workflow is: Remini for the restoration step, then a separate tool for the animation step. If you have photographs in poor condition, this combination often produces better animation results than taking the damaged scan straight to an animation tool.

Remini does not specialize in old family photo animation. The interface is designed around the restoration use case. But for damaged prints where restoration is the bottleneck, it fills a gap none of the other tools here cover as well. The Remini alternatives guide covers the full picture for that workflow.

When LiveMemory Is Still the Right Call

This article is not a case against LiveMemory. For certain situations, it is the best available option:

  • You already pay for a MyHeritage plan for genealogy research, and LiveMemory is included in your plan
  • Your photos are already on MyHeritage, linked to your family tree, and you want to animate them without uploading them elsewhere
  • You need more than a handful of animations per year and the plan cost works out cheaper than paying per photo elsewhere
  • You want the MyHeritage ecosystem: sharing animated photos with relatives who are also on the platform, linking animations to specific people in your tree

If none of those apply, the cost and quota structure of a MyHeritage plan is more than most people need to animate a box of family photographs.

How to Choose

Animating a small or medium collection without a subscription: Incarn. EUR 1.99 per photo. First animation free to test on your actual photographs before committing to a pack.

Already paying for MyHeritage: Check which plan you are on. Deep Nostalgia® is included in Photo and Complete. LiveMemory requires Photo or Omni. If you are on Complete and want LiveMemory, an upgrade is needed.

Free, watermark acceptable: Genie by FamilySearch. No quota, no cost, no account beyond FamilySearch itself.

Mobile editing, hands-on control: Motionleap. The manual flow tool produces clean edges when you have the patience to set it up.

Damaged photos that need cleaning before animation: Remini for restoration, then Incarn or Genie for the animation step.
