Is It Safe to Upload Family Photos to an AI Photo Animator? (2026)
Before you upload a family photo to an AI photo animator, ask five questions: who receives it, does it train AI, how long is it kept, can you delete it, is it sold. Here are Incarn's answers.

In short
It can be safe, if the service gives clear answers to five questions: who receives the photo, whether it is used to train AI, how long it is kept, whether you can delete it yourself, and whether it is sold or used for advertising. Incarn sends your photo to its AI provider only to create the animation, with AI training switched off, never sells your data, removes unpaid previews from your account after 45 days (then erases them from its servers within 60 more days), and lets you delete your photos and your account yourself from your gallery.
Short answer: It can be safe, as long as the service answers five plain questions: who receives your photo, whether it trains AI, how long it is kept, whether you can delete it yourself, and whether it is sold or used for advertising. On Incarn, the photo goes to the AI provider only to create the animation, AI training is switched off, nothing is sold, unpaid previews are erased automatically, and you can delete your photos and your account yourself.
A family photo is not like any other file. It shows faces of people you love, sometimes people who are no longer here to say yes or no. So it is reasonable to pause before sending one to an AI tool you found online a few minutes ago.
The good news: you do not need to be a lawyer or a technician to judge a service. Five questions are enough. This guide walks through them, shows how Incarn answers each one, and then covers what remains your own responsibility.
Five questions to ask before you upload a family photo
Ask these of any AI photo service, whether it animates, restores or colorizes. The answers should be in its privacy policy, written plainly. If you cannot find them, that is already an answer.
1. Who receives my photo?
Most AI photo tools do not run the AI themselves. They send your photo to a specialist company (the "AI provider") that does the actual work. That is normal. What matters is that the service names who receives your photo, says why, and says where that company operates.
2. Will my photo be used to train AI?
Some AI companies keep the images they receive to improve their models. This is called "training". Once a photo has been used for training, it cannot really be taken back out. Look for a clear sentence saying your photos are not used for training, by the service or by its AI provider.
3. How long is my photo kept?
"As long as necessary" is not an answer. A good policy gives numbers: how many days for a photo you only tried, and how long for content you paid for.
4. Can I delete it myself?
You should be able to delete a photo, and close your account, yourself, with a button, without having to write a formal request and wait. Check that deleting your account also deletes your photos and videos.
5. Is my data sold or used for advertising?
Some free services earn money by selling data or by building advertising profiles from what you upload. Look for an explicit "we do not sell your data" and a cookie banner that lets you refuse advertising cookies.
How Incarn answers each question
Here are Incarn's answers, taken from its privacy policy. Please note that the full policy is available in French only.
| Question | Incarn's answer |
|---|---|
| Who receives my photo? | The AI provider BytePlus (the maker of Seedance), only to create your animation; a backup provider if BytePlus declines the photo |
| Is it used to train AI? | No, the training option is switched off |
| How long is it kept? | Unpaid preview: removed after 45 days, erased within 60 days after that. Paid animation: as long as your account exists |
| Can I delete it myself? | Yes, a photo or your whole account, from your gallery |
| Is it sold or used for ads? | No sale of data, no advertising profiling |
Who receives the photo
When you upload a photo, it first goes through an automatic moderation filter (Sightengine) that blocks forbidden content, such as nudity or inappropriate images of minors. This check is automatic: a person does not look through your photos.
The photo is then sent to Incarn's AI provider, BytePlus, the company behind the Seedance 2.0 model, only to create your animation. If BytePlus declines a photo, it can be passed to a backup AI provider, MiniMax (Hailuo model, based in China), for the same single purpose, as listed in the privacy policy. BytePlus operates from Singapore, under the European Union's standard contractual clauses (the contract model the EU provides for sending data outside Europe).
Your files are stored on Cloudflare R2, and the website and its database are hosted in Germany. Payments go through Stripe: Incarn never sees your card number.
AI training
BytePlus offers an option that would allow it to use the content it receives to train its models. Incarn has switched this option off. Your family photos are used to make your animation, and nothing else.
How long it is kept
- A free preview you do not buy is removed from your account after 45 days, then erased from the servers no later than 60 days after that.
- An animation you paid for stays available for as long as your account exists, so you do not lose something you bought.
Deleting it yourself
You can delete any photo from your gallery. You can also delete your whole account from the same gallery, which erases your photos and videos. If you prefer, you can ask by email at [email protected].
Sale and advertising
Incarn does not sell your data and does not build advertising profiles from your photos. Measurement and advertising cookies are only loaded after you accept them in the cookie banner.
What remains your responsibility
A careful service protects your photo once it receives it. But a few things are up to you.
Do you have the right to use the photo?
A photo from your own family album is usually fine for personal use. A photo taken by a professional studio, or found on a website, may belong to someone else. Think twice before posting the animation publicly. Our guide on whether AI photo animation is legal and ethical goes into more detail.
Have living relatives agreed?
If the photo shows someone who is still alive, a cousin, your sister, your own children, ask them first. Some people love seeing themselves move; others find it unsettling. For relatives who have passed away, it is kind to involve close family before sharing the animation widely, for example at a reunion or on social media.
Never send identity documents
An AI photo animator needs a face, nothing more. Never upload a passport, an ID card, a driving licence, a bank card or a document showing an address or a signature, to Incarn or to any other photo service. If an old photo has a letter or a document in the background, crop it out before uploading.
A few simple habits
- Upload a copy or a scan, and keep the original print safe at home.
- Use a real email address you check, so you can sign back in and delete your content later if you wish.
- Delete the photos you no longer need once you have downloaded your animation.
Trying it without risk
On Incarn, your first animation is a free preview (lower resolution, with a watermark). You only need an email address, no card. You can watch the result, then decide. If you keep it, the HD version without a watermark costs EUR 1.99 for one photo, with larger packs down to EUR 0.80 per photo (see pricing). There is no subscription, and credits never expire. If you would like to know more about how the free preview works, read how to animate a photo for free without signing up, and for the story behind the service, see why Incarn was built.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to upload family photos to an AI photo animator?
It can be, if the service answers five questions clearly in its privacy policy: who receives the photo, whether it is used to train AI, how long it is kept, whether you can delete it yourself, and whether your data is sold or used for advertising. If a policy is vague on any of these, choose another service.
Does Incarn use my family photos to train AI?
No. Your photo is sent to Incarn's AI provider, BytePlus (the maker of Seedance), only to create your animation. The option that would let BytePlus use uploaded content to train its models is switched off on Incarn's account.
How long does Incarn keep my photos?
A free preview you do not buy is removed from your account after 45 days, then erased from the servers no later than 60 days after that. Animations you pay for stay available for as long as your account exists. You can delete a photo, or your whole account, yourself at any time from your gallery.
Can I delete my photos and my account myself?
Yes. You can delete a photo from your gallery, and delete your whole account from the same place, without writing to anyone. You can also ask by email at [email protected].
Does anyone at Incarn look at my photos?
Moderation is automatic. When you upload a photo, an automatic filter (Sightengine) checks it and blocks forbidden content, such as nudity. A person does not look through your photos.
Is it safe to upload a photo of a living relative?
Technically yes, but ask them first. A living person has a say in how their face is used, and some people do not want to see themselves animated. For relatives who have passed away, involve the close family before sharing the result widely.
